I’m hoping that this morning was the end of it. Most of the snow was melted by the time I left work this evening. Tonight, I’m just going to just hunker down and finish up the last bit of sleeve left on my February lady sweater and watch some Thursday night tv.

As I was driving up 99, I saw a massive hawk sitting in a tree watching all of us drive along and waiting for, I’m only assuming, a small weak child to prey on. This hawk was huge. It looked like it was the size of a baby terradactyl.

Then I saw some small snowflakes. So I head back to the bunker. I made dinner and roasted a chicken so I could have leftovers and whatnot for the week. I take the chicken out of the oven and admire my skills. I decide to look out the window and see if the snowflakes are still there. They’re there. And they brought some friends along.

They even partied enough to knock out my direct tv. I actually had to call Direct TV because I didn’t realize this snow was slushy and nasty. I was told that there was some interference and perhaps if I brushed the snow off the dish that would help. Um… no. The dish is on the roof. Thanks. but I’ll turn on the radio, keep knitting or perhaps read a book. Ok – full disclosure for a minute – I did have an internal freak out for a second. I’ve cut back on a lot of things because of the recession and kept my direct tv because I cut out going to movies and even renting or buying new movies. I’ve cut my yarn buying down to almost nothing. And between nothing being able to buy more than 1 skein at a time and loosing my direct tv, I had a mini 1 second long breakdown. Then I slapped myself across the face and put my big girl pants on. Fortunately, the direct tv came back on so I didn’t have to go out and stand on the neighbors front lawn trying to catch a glimpse of their cable tv.

The cabaret sweater is all knit up. I just need to seam it all up. I’ll probably start that tonight and finish it up tomorrow.

It’s been a bit crazy the past couple of days. I’ve been getting a little cabin fever. I was able to go out yesterday and do some running around… thank god. Today I was stuck inside. Which was probably good because I had some laundry and housework to do before heading back east.

I decided to get out and get some fresh air and get a latte over at the cafe. The cafe and PCC were the only things that have been open in the neighborhood… thankfully.

Snow on the Strip.

Before I headed down to the cafe my upstairs neighbor told me I had to check out the fort the kids down the street built.

Front door of the snow fort

The view from the street

Fort guard

Well… We could not be out done. So by the time I got back my neighbor had already built a snow bunny. And then we started on our own fort.

We’re not done. But it seems like we’ll have plenty of time to work on it tomorrow considering no one was driving and the buses in my neighborhood weren’t running. But we’ll see. Tomorrow could be completely different in terms of weather.

The beginnings of the Fortress of Solitude

I’ve been knitting like a fiend because of the storm. I started my airplane/airport project and I have a feeling I’ll be half way done with it by the time I’m suppose to be getting on a plane!

I ventured out of the neighborhood today. And it wasn’t by foot! It was by car. Getting out of the neighborhood was a bit tricky. But once I got to Renton, the roads weren’t too bad. A few times the ice under the tires made it feel like I was driving on a cobblestone road. And on the way home, on a road that was a solid sheet of ice, I was driving around 20 miles an hour. Which I thought was a good speed for such bad road conditions. Then some ass came up behind me and passed me as we were going up hill. And he was in a minivan… not any better at handling ice than my car. I saw him try and pass 3 SUV/trucks right before my house. I’m sure, by now, he’s wrapped his minivan around a telephone pole.

After that wild little trip, I’m now bunkered in waiting for the next storm. So far they’ve told us that we should expect power outtages and snow between a dusting and 5 – 8 inches. So I’ve got my candles, blankets, reading material and whatever else at the ready. But for now, I’ve only seen a small flurry of flakes and I’ve watched Gosford Park and am getting ready to start knitting the Cabaret Raglan Sweater with some yarn from my stash. I figure it’ll be my airplane project. But before I start that, I’m going to make some cookies for our office Christmas party before the power goes out. And maybe I’ll be able to watch another movie or two.

Today was another snow day. No one could really get out of their neighborhoods unless they had some serious chains on their tires or they had huge trucks. So I stayed in and knit a bit and then headed out to Safeway which is about 2 miles from my house. The walk would have been a bit better had the sidewalks not been so icy. But I made good time and was back within 2 hours. The place was packed. I was suprized at all the people that drove. People were fishtailing all about on the roads and driving like they would if the roads were dry. Even though the walk was long, I’d prefer that to driving. At least I knew I would make it home in one piece.

I had to walk to Walgreen’s this evening. It’s about a 3 mile round trip walk. I took my camera along and took a few shots. Walgreens is on the corner of Rainier and Genesee, which is a busy intersection. Rainier takes you north to the First Hill neighborhood. It eventually turns into Boren which runs right thru town. If you’re heading south on Rainier it takes you to Renton and right onto I-167. It’s definitely one of the main streets in Seattle. It’s usually backed up by 4. And here’s what it looked like today when I got down there:

Rainier facing North

Rainier and Genesee

Rainier heading south

So the way back home, I walked over to where I could a good view of the lake. That’s when I noticed Genesee Hill. Genesee Hill is the same hill that is at the end of the Danskin triathlon. It’s the hill that makes you think that you will never again do another triathlon. And when I got over to the hill, this is what I saw:

Genesee Hill

If I can’t get out of my neighborhood tomorrow, I’m making a sled and heading to Genesee Hill.

Then I decided to take a small detour on the way home. Past the house with all the Christmas lights and the awesome tree house.

Whole lotta lights

Christmas light tree house

Then I turned around to face the lake and took another snapshot.

Snowy Lake Washington

I slowly made my way back. Everyone was out and about. I think that when it snows in Seattle it brings out the niceness in people. Everyone said hello and stopped to talk about the snow or their dogs (between the kids and the dogs, I’m not sure who enjoyed the snow more). There was a woman on the walk home who was sweeping up her sidewalk and I said hi and that’s when I noticed her snowman.

Snowman

And now I’m home and in for the evening. I’ll see what tomorrow brings… more snow? ice? perhaps yet another snowday? Right now I a nice hot bath is calling me.

We’ve been having a lot of storms recently and it’s been just a mess to try and get to work. We’re not used to snow and ice here. Our typical winter weather is about 40 degrees, grey skies and rain in some form. It’s rare that we get snow. Maybe one day a year. But over the past week or two it’s been snowing, freezing rain and ice. Yesterday it was supposed to be really bad. I got up, turned on the news and they said it was snowing to the north and south of Seattle. And Seattle itself was completely clear. It was grey and overcast, but it was clear. At around 5/5:30am I saw a flash of light and then thunder. I turned on the news and it’s like being back east. There’s snow, freezing rain, ice and I even think there was some hail. Where I am, we’ve got about 2 or so inches of snow and it’s like a white out outside! I tried to use my cell and there’s some funkyness going on and hopefully it’ll be back in a few. This is supposed to keep up for the morning and part of the afternoon, and then tonight, we get back down to freezing. So I guess I might not be able to get into work. Tomorrow is suppose to be cold but no snow. And then Saturday – well there might be more snow coming in late Saturday night and into Sunday. It looks like Seattle will have a white Christmas! And if that wasn’t enough Vegas got snow! Hey Gov. Palin, do you believe in Global Warming now? I’m pretty sure the last time it snowed Vegas was when dinosaurs were roaming the earth. Ok, maybe not that far back, but really…come on now.

For the love of all that is holy! According to Weather.com we are suppose to have snow all day tomorrow. How much of it sticks to the ground, who knows. But I have to say, I am tired of wearing two pairs of socks, running tights, jeans, a long sleeve shirt, two polar fleece tops, a hat and fingerless gloves to work. That’s right, for the past two mornings, that’s what I’ve been getting up and putting on. And I’m still cold at work. Granted it’s a warehouse, but still.

And since I didn’t quite get it in time for the last SP13 question, here’s my answers to this week’s question:

Part A:

Are you doing any holiday knitting? – yup. I tried to do a fair amount of making of gifts this year. It just seems more personal to me. Not to mention, times are tight and if I can make something and possibly save a little money, then hey, why not! I will admit, I probably should have started a lot sooner. So hopefully next year (which is in a few weeks) I’ll start sooner, rather than later.
Part B:

Have you finished? Almost. I think I have a bit of finishing work to do. Right now I’m trying to figure out what I’m going to knit while I’m on the plane!
